Each year, the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the University of Essex come together for an extraordinary celebration of sport, community, and friendly rivalry: Derby Day. This highly anticipated event is one of the highlights of the academic calendar for both universities, showcasing the best of student athleticism, teamwork, and university pride.
Held annually in the spring, Derby Day brings together hundreds of students from both UEA and Essex to compete in a diverse range of sports—from football and rugby to more unique contests like ultimate frisbee and archery. Whether on the pitch, court, or field, athletes push themselves to the limit to secure victory and bragging rights for their university.
A Longstanding Tradition of Unity Through Sport
Since its inception, Derby Day has grown into a spirited yet friendly competition, drawing in crowds of spectators. Students and staff from both institutions unite to support their athletes, creating an electric atmosphere filled with school chants, banners, and vibrant team colors. The event alternates each year between the campuses of UEA and Essex. Last year's competition in Colchester was a thrilling showcase of talent and determination, with Essex narrowly missing out on victory, allowing UEA to claim its tenth consecutive win.
